Spring Lake was formed as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 14, 1892, from portions of Wall Township. During the so called "Gilded Age" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Spring Lake developed into a coastal resort for high society members of New York City and Philadelphia in a similar fashion to the settlements of Newport, RI and Bar Harbor, ME. Time stands still in Spring Lake. There are no traffic lights, no parking meters, and no need to wear watches. Even during the off-season, Spring Lake is a tranquil place to escape. It has a two-mile boardwalk, a wide expanse of beach; a history museum housed in an 1897 structure that started as a school; and 11 Victorian inns featuring architecture, amenities, and service more typical of a bygone era.
The H. W. Mountz School is a public school that serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school had an enrollment of 282 students in the 2005-06 school year.
